Historical background

ARCADIA - PSOPHIS

(5th century BC)

The city would have been founded before the 6th century BC. Its origin is linked to the labors of Hercules, in particular that of the boar of Erymanthe and the capture of the deer of Cyrenia. the city took the name of Phegeus before being refounded under his name by two sons of Herakles. Located between two rushing rivers, the area was famous for its abundant fish (trout). The city was taken by Philip V of Macedon in 219 BC before being integrated into the Achaean league.
