Historical background

ASIA MINOR - SELJUQS OF RUM - KAY KHUSRU II

(1236-1245)

The Sultanate of Roum or Sultanate of Iconium is a Seljuk sultanate established from 1077 to 1307 in Anatolia following the Battle of Mantzikert. The sultanate was established following an agreement between the Byzantine Empire and the Seljuk leader Süleyman I Shah. Its name refers to the “Romans” in the sense understood by the Arabs and then the Turks between the 7th and 15th centuries: the former citizens of the Eastern Roman Empire.
