Historical background

AUGUSTUS

(+ 14 AD)

Consecration of Trajan Decius

In the course of the year 250, Trajan Decius proceeded to the issuance of Antoninianus restoring the good emperors of the two previous centuries. He carried out a general overhaul of the previous denarii which had already not been produced since the reign of Philip, apart from rare issues of donativa. It sometimes happens to meet antoniniens overstruck on funds from Trajan to Marc Aurèle. The list of restored emperors includes for the first century: Augustus, Vespasian, Titus and Nerva, and for the second century: Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, Commodus; Septimius Severus and Alexander Severus for the third century. Neither Tiberius nor Claudius appear in the list of good emperors. Those of the civil wars of 68 and 193 are also not part of this portrait gallery. If it is normal not to find Caligula, Nero or Caracalla there, the presence of Commodus is more surprising, the rehabilitation of 195 by Septimius Severus having prevailed over the "Damnatio Memoriæ".
