Historical background

AUGUSTUS

(01/16/27 BC -08/19/14 AD)

Augustus completely reorganized the coinage. The aureus is worth 25 silver denarii or 100 sesterces or 400 bronze aces. The ace seems struck under Augustus at 1/30th of a pound (1 pound weight = approximately 325 g). The organization of the manufacture is under the responsibility of the Senate and the direction of the monetary triumvirs "Triumvir Auro, Argento, Ære Flando Feriundo" in charge of the preparation of the blanks and the minting of the coins.
