Historical background

AUVERGNE - BISHOPRIC OF CLERMONT - ANONYMOUS

(12th century)

The coinage of the Virgin could begin under the episcopates of Aimerie (1111-1150) or Etienne VI de Mercoeur (1151-1169). The heavy weight of some examples leans towards the first solution. Hugues de la Tour (1250-1286) received a remonstrance from Alphonse de Poitiers (1241-1271), brother of Saint-Louis, for having weakened the coinage. Philippe IV in 1295 confirmed the right to mint coins in Adhémar de Cros. The coin of Clermont is still quoted in 1315 under the episcopate of Aubert de Montaigu (1307-1328).
