Historical background

BERRY - LORDSHIP OF SAINT-AIGNAN

(11th century)

Saint-Aignan, which had belonged to the house of Blois in the person of Thibaut le Tricheur, seems to have freed itself from Blois-Chartraine supervision in the first years of the 11th century. The donation of the seigneury of Saint-Aignan would have been made by the counts of Chartres and Blois, Thibaut I (995-1004) or Eudes II (1004-1037). Geoffroy de Donzy (c.1000-1037) was first lord of Gien and Donzy before owning Saint-Aignan. For this reason, we think that the concession of Saint-Aignan will only be made under Eudes II, perhaps after 1019, at a date when Eudes, very powerful, became count of Champagne..
