Historical background

BITHYNIA - KIKAIA

(1st century BC)

The primitive site was founded under the name of Ancore and renamed under the name of Antigoneia in 316 BC by Antigone le Borgne. After the battle of Ipsos in 301 BC, Lysimachus gave it its definitive name. The city was taken by the king of Bithynia, Zipoites I shortly before the battle of Couroupedion in 281 BC. After the death of Nicomedes IV, and his donation to Rome, Nicaea became one of the most important in the region . The province of Bthynia and Pontus was created by Pompey in 63 BC. For the imperial period, coinage began under Augustus and ended under Quietus.
