Historical background

BOURBONNAIS - PRIORSHIP OF SOUVIGNY AND LORDS OF BOURBON - AGNÈS AND JOHN

(1262-1287)

The coinage of Souvigny begins around 1080 and is mentioned in the acts from 1095. It is divided into 8 periods: the sixth period from 1262 to 1268 associates Souvigny, Jean de Bourgogne and Agnès. Béatrice de Bourgogne succeeded Agnès de Dampierre, the sister of Mahaut II (1249-1262). Agnès had married Jean de Bourgogne, the brother of Eudes de Bourgogne, husband of Mahaut II. Béatrice married Robert de Clermont (1256-1317), sixth son of Louis IX and Marguerite de Provence. First Lord of Bourbon, he was created Duke of Bourbon. Louis I of Bourbon said the lame succeeded his mother, Béatrice, who had died in 1310. Souvigny is still mentioned in the ordinance of 1315. Philippe V le Long bought the Mint from his cousin Louis de Clermont in 1321.
