Historical background

BOURBONNAIS - PRIORSHIP OF SOUVIGNY - ANONYMOUS

(12th century-1213)

In 916, the Lord of Bourbon donated Souvigny to the Abbey of Cluny, which arrogated to itself the right to mint coins, a right it did not have, and had it confirmed in 1058 by Pope Stephen IX ( 1057-1058). Coinage begins around 1080 and is mentioned in records from 1095. Coinage is divided into 8 periods: 1) 1080-1213, anonymous coinage; 2) 1213-1216, coinage between Guy de Dampierre and the prior Hugues; 3) 1216-1243, coinage of priors alone; 4) 1243-1249, associated coinage of Bourbon and Souvigny; 5) 1249-1262, return to Souvigny coinage only; 6) 1262-1268, coinage of Souvigny, Jean de Bourgogne and Agnès; 7) 1268-1272, Souvigny coinage alone; 8) since 1272, new pariage between Souvigny and the lords of Bourbon. Souvigny is still mentioned in the ordinance of 1315. Philippe V the Long bought the coin from his cousin Louis de Clermont in 1321.
