Historical background

BRIENNOIS (BRIENNO PAGUS and VICUS)

(7th - 8th century)

The Briennois is a French region around Brienne-le-Château in Aube. Crossed by the Aube, this micro-region belonging to the humid Champagne region is delimited to the south-west by the Regional Natural Park of the Orient Forest and its lakes as well as to the north-east by the Soulaines forest. The region is known for its half-timbered churches. The site is probably already occupied by the Gauls and its name seems to be derived from the Celtic briavenna which designates a set of pontoons in connection with the seniority of the port activity of Brienne-la-Vieille. Its castle was destroyed by the Normans in 951..
