Historical background

BURGUNDY - DUCHY OF BURGUNDY - ROBERT II

(1272-1306)

Robert II succeeded his father Hugues IV, who died in 1272, and married Agnès, the sister of Philippe le Hardi, in 1279. On the monetary level, the reign of Robert II was a period of compromise with the king of France. In 1275 Philippe III, known as "the Bold" (1270-1285) succeeded in imposing the course of his Parisian coins and tournaments alongside the Digenois. In 1300, Philippe IV called "le Bel" (1385-1314) even obtained from the duke, for a period of three years, a ban on using Digenois in Burgundy. Robert II died in March 1306 in Vernon-sur-Seine leaving the duchy to Hugues V (1306-1315).
