Historical background

CARAUSIUS for DIOCLETIAN and MAXIMIAN HERCULIUS

(292-293)

During the truce established after the failure of the reconquest of 289, Carausius struck very rare coins with the effigies of Diocletian or Maximian Hercules. These coins all have the particularity of having on the reverse the tripling of the G indicating the existence of three augusts: Carausius, Diocletian and Maximian. Rare coins, in the name of Carausius, also have the same plural mark on the reverse. The appointment of two new Caesars on March 1, 293 put an end to this fiction. After the death of Carausius, in the summer of 293, his successor Allectus was never recognized by the central empire either..
