Historical background

CASSIA

(55 BC)

This moneyer, perhaps a cousin of Caius Cassius, one of Caesar's main assassins, is mentioned by Cicero in a letter to Atticus. Cassius Longinus was quaestor in 52 BC. Chosen by Pompey, he filled his office at the same time as Marc Antoine, Caesar's candidate while Pompey was Consul with Metellus Scipio. Tribune of the plebs in 49 BC, once again with Marc Antoine, a supporter of Pompey, Quintus Cassius Longinus joined Caesar and had to flee from Rome in 49 BC disguised as a slave. He then follows Caesar to Greece and then to Spain and receives an important command of which he does not show himself worthy. He must run away like a thief.
