Historical background

CLODIUS ALBINUS

(04/193-19/02/197)

Caesar

Albin was proclaimed in April 193, at the latest in May. After the elimination of Dide Julien, he is content with the title of Caesar subordinated to Septimius Severus. In 194, Albin was consul for the second time with Septimius Severus. His first consulship is sufficient. The rupture is consummated after the victory of Septimius Severus over Pescennius Niger. Albin, who remained in Rome, proclaimed himself august. Septimius Severus raises Caracalla to the caesarat on May 27, 196. After the fall of Byzantium, in the summer, he marches on Rome, which Clodius Albinus has abandoned, followed by most of the Senate. A refugee in Gaul, Albin was finally beaten on February 19, 197 near Lyon. Albin, his family and many supporters (over 20,000) were executed in retaliation.
