Obverse description : Buste lauré consulaire de Constantin Ier à gauche vu de trois quarts en avant (H*).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Pius Augustus”, (Constantin pieux auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI/ S|P// MSL.
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié, debout à gauche, nu, le manteau sur l'épaule gauche, tombant sur l’épaule, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti”, (Au compagnon le Soleil Invincible).

Commentary


C’est la première fois que nous présentons cet exemplaire à la vente. Poids léger. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Les lettres S-P pourraient être les initiales pour “Sacra Pecunia” (Monnaie sacrée).

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
