Obverse description : Buste consulaire, lauré de Constantin Ier à gauche, tenant le scipio de la main droite, vu de trois quarts en avant.
Obverse translation : “Imperator Constantinus Pius Felix Augustus”, (L’empereur Constantin pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : SOLI INVI-CTO COMITI/ C|S// TARL.
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié à demi nu, le manteau sur l’épaule, debout à droite, tournée à gauche, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti”, (Au compagnon le Soleil invincible).

Commentary


Poids léger. Avec son argenture. Rubans de type 3. Buste exceptionnel pour cet atelier. Philippe Ferrando n’avait recensé qu’un seul exemplaire de ce type, conservé au musée d’Arles. C’est le seul exemplaire de ce type présent sur le marché !.

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
