Historical background

CRETE - HIERAPYTNA

(2nd - 1st century BC)

Hierapytna was located on the southern part of the eastern coast of Crete in the nome of Lasithi. In classical times, the city was the most important of eastern Crete in continual rivalry with Praisos. In the 3rd century, the maritime city was renowned for its acts of piracy. During the Cretan War, it was the ally of Philip V of Macedon with the Cretan cities against Rhodes. Hierapytna was the last free city of Crete when it was conquered by the Romans in 67 BC and was then supplanted by Gortyn.
