Historical background

DAUPHINÉ - ARCHBISHOPRIC OF VIENNE - SOBON

(927-949)

Vienne was the former capital of the Allobroges. Christianized very early, it became a bishopric, then an archbishopric in the 4th century. In the division of Verdun in 843, it belonged to Lothaire and was part of the greater Lotharingia. Boson made it the capital of the kingdom of Provence in 879. It lost its importance after the death of Conrad the Pacific when it was attributed to Louis the Blind (890-929) who united the kingdoms of Burgundy and Provence before giving birth in the following century in the kingdom of Arles. From 926, Charles-Constantin, bastard of Louis the Blind governs the county of Vienne until 962. Sobon was Archbishop of Vienne from 927 to 949. He was the brother of Engelbert who had married Thiberge, sister of Hugues d'Arles, wife of Garnier de Troyes and mother of Hugues, Count of Troyes.
