Historical background

DUCHY OF LORRAINE - ELIZABETH CHARLOTTE

(1676-1744)

Elisabeth-Charlotte, daughter of Philippe d'Orléans and sister of the Regent, was the wife of Léopold de Lorraine and the mother of François III of Lorraine (or I of Austria). When Francis abdicated in 1737 in favor of Stanislas Leszczynski (1737-1766), Francis received the Duchy of Parma pending the imperial succession because he had married the daughter of Charles VI. The Dowager Duchess received in exchange compensations.
