Commentary

Historical background

FRANKISH KINGDOM OF BURGUNDY, BURGUNDIANS

(end of sixth century)

According to J. Lafaurie in the catalog of the museum of Lyon, during this still poorly defined period 550/575, very large quantities of triens were struck, the types of which are derived from the coins struck in Italy by the Byzantines in Ravenna, taken from the Ostrogoths in May 540. The strikes are initially quite close to their prototypes: on the right, diademed bust on the right, the diadem closed behind the head by a two-pendant knot, dressed in a chlamys, in a fairly realistic style; on the reverse, Victoire going to the obverse, the bust facing and the head turned towards the left. She holds in her right hand a crown with two pendants, in her left hand a cruciger globe.
