Coments on the condition:
Très beau portrait avec une patine marron foncé. Très légère oxydation de surface au droit et au revers. Trace d’argenture superficielle encore bien présente au revers

Obverse description : Buste lauré et cuirassé de Galère césar à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (B*).
Obverse translation : "Maximianus Nobilissimus Cæsar" (Maximien très noble césar).

Reverse legend : GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI/ A|*// TR.
Reverse description : Genius (le Génie) nu debout à gauche, coiffé du modius, le manteau tombant sur l’épaule, tenant une patère de la main droite et une corne d'abondance de la gauche.
Reverse translation : "Genio Populi Romani" (Au Génie du Peuple romain).
Commentary
Sur cet exemplaire, au revers, la corne d’abondance est réhaussée par une ligne pointillée.

Caesar
Galère is of humble origin. Chosen as Caesar on March 1 or May 1, 293, he was subordinate to Diocletian to help him govern the East. Galerius suffered a crushing defeat in 296 against the Sassanids but the following year he defeated Narses. According to Lactantius, he was at the origin of the persecution of Christians in 302-303. During Diocletian's illness, he pushes the latter to abdicate. Diocletian and Maximian leave power on May 1, 305 to Galerius and Constance, who become augusts. The last six years of his life, he watched helplessly as the political regime created by Diocletian: the Tetrarchy crumbled. He died on May 5, 311 after having interrupted the persecution against Christians five days earlier..
