Historical background

GALLIA - VIENNA - VIENNE - JULIUS CAESAR and OCTAVIAN

(36 BC)

Vienna, a colony with the "jus Latinum", was founded in 50 BC under the name of "Colonia Iulia Viennensis", under the auspices of Julius Caesar, as its name suggests. The coinage is after Caesar's death. According to the civic coinage of Lugdunum, it could date from 36 BC. Later, Augustus will confer on the city the "jus Romanorum" in 16-15 BC under the name of "Colonia Iulia Augusta Florentia Viennesis".
