Historical background

GERMANY - KINGDOM OF HANOVER - GEORGE III OF THE UNITED KINGDOM

(1760-1820)

Georges III (4/06/1738-29/01-1820) is the grandson of Georges II. He succeeded his grandfather in 1760 and became King of England. Georges' family is originally from Brunswick, Germany. He is therefore also Duke of Brunswick, and, as such, elector of the Emperor. Georges kept Brunswick until 1807, when this region was detached to form the kingdom of Westphalia, which was given to Napoleon's last brother, Jérôme (1784-1860). Georges III will recover an enlarged Brunswick, after 1815, which will be erected into a kingdom under the name of Hanover. This kingdom will be annexed by Prussia in 1866.
