Historical background

GORDIAN I AFRICANUS

(01-02/238)

Africa went into rebellion at the very beginning of the year 238. Gordian, governor of the Proconsular, took the lead in the revolt and immediately associated his son with the same name with power, by having him proclaimed Augustus. The Gordians are recognized by the Senate which hates Maximin I Thrace. But the reign of African emperors lasts only twenty-one days. The governor of Numidia, loyal to Maximin, enters Proconsulary with the III Augusta legion and crushes the ill-prepared troops of Gordian II. He finds death in battle. Hearing the news, his father commits suicide..
