Historical background

HAINAUT - COUNTY OF HAINAUT - WILLIAM III OF BAVARIA

(1355-1389)

On the death of William II (1337-1345), his sister Margaret of Hainaut succeeded him with her husband Louis IV of Bavaria, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (+1347). Marguerite II d'Avesnes reigns over the duchy until around 1354-1356, shortly before her death in 1356. Their son Guillaume III l'insane (1332-1389) succeeds her and will reign over Hainaut for more than forty years. In addition to the county of Hainaut, Guillaume includes his other titles of count of Holland, Zeeland and Friesland. He married Matilda of Lancaster in 1352 who was interned in 1357 (+1362). In 1389, his brother Albert I (1336-1404) ascended the throne.
