Exemplaire sur un flan large et ovale, légèrement décentré sur la couronne tourelée de Cybèle. Frappe un peu molle au revers. Patine vert foncé

Commentary


Poids très léger. Sur cet exemplaire, Aphrodite ne semble pas appuyée sur la colonne placée devant elle. Le nom du magistrat placé derrière Aphrodite n’est pas identifiable.

Historical background


IONIA - SMYRNA

(3rd - 2nd century BC)

Smyrna was one of the oldest cities in Ionia, destroyed in the 6th century BC by the Lydians. The city was refounded three centuries later by Antigone le Borgne at the end of the fourth century BC. After being called Eurydicieia under Lysimachus, Smyrna experienced great expansion after the Peace of Apamea (188 BC). VS.). It became one of the most powerful cities in Asia Minor under Roman rule. It is said to be the homeland of Homer.
