Historical background

ITALY - DUCHY OF PARMA DE PIACENZA AND GUASTALLA - FERDINAND I OF BOURBON

(1765-1802)

Ferdinand de Bourbon (1751-1802) succeeded his father Philippe I when he was only 14 years old. In 1769, he married Marie-Amélie of Austria, daughter of Empress Marie-Thérèse and sister of Marie-Antoinette. The Duchy is shared between French and Austrian influences. Under the French Revolution, the Duchy declared itself neutral, which did not prevent its occupation by the Army of Italy and then its attachment to France a few days after his death on October 9, 1802..
