Commentary


Les augustales sont parmi les monnaies les plus connues du Moyen-Âge. Frappées après 1231, elles montrent la volonté de Frédéric II de s’inscrire dans la lignée des empereurs romains. Les augustales s’inspirent des monnaies antiques, et présentent le buste de l’empereur et l’aigle impérial. Ces monnaies sont très recherchées.

ITALY - HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - FREDERICK II OF HOHENSTAUFEN

(26/12/1194-13/12/1250)

Frederick II (1194-1250), the son of Henry VI and Constance, succeeded his father in 1197. His mother died the following year. He became king of the Romans in 1212 and was crowned emperor in 1220. First married to Isabella of Aragon, daughter of Alfonso II of Aragon, Count of Barcelona and Provence, he fought during his reign against the papacy in Italy. Excommunicated several times, he succeeded in recovering Jerusalem for a very short period.
