Historical background

ITALY - MARQUISATE OF SALUZZO - LUDOVICO II

(1438-1504)

Son of Ludovic I, Marquis of Saluzzo, Ludovic II was Count of Carmagnole until April 8, 1475, when he succeeded his father as head of the marquisate. The prudent paternal policy of neutrality was called into question with a costly military campaign against Charles I of Savoy in 1478: the marquisate of Saluzzo, after various reversals of fortune - which were to lead him to be removed from the authority of his marquis - began then a dangerous decline. Between 1487 and March 14, 1490, the Marquisate of Saluzzo was temporarily annexed by the Duke of Savoy. On the latter's death, it was returned to Ludovico II, but much of its past glory was gone. Condotière and patron, he created the monetary workshop of Carmagnole in 1480.
