Historical background

ITALY - PAPAL STATES - ADRIAN VI (Adriaan Floriszoon)

(09/01/1522 - 14/09/1523)

(09/01/1522 - 14/09/1523)

Adrien VI (1459-1523) succeeds Leo X. This succession is difficult and the concale decides to elect a quasi-unknown, Adrien Florensz, cardinal of Utrecht. Theologian and professor in Louvain, Adrien Florensz was also the tutor of Charles -Quint. Simple, pious and austere, Adrian VI contrasts with his predecessors but does not try to spare the curia and the Romans who quickly consider him an uneducated barbarian. Despite his qualities and his desire to reform, he quickly became unpopular. He died in indifference.
