Obverse description : Buste du Christ de face, portant le nimbe crucigère, vêtu du pallium et du colombium, la main droite bénissante et tenant de la main gauche les Évangiles.

Reverse description : Bustes vus à mi-corps de la Vierge à droite qui couronne Jean Ier à gauche ; la Vierge est nimbée et vêtue de la stola et du maphorium, Nicéphore II est couronné avec pendilia bouletés, vêtu du loros ; Jean tient un globe surmonté d’un trèfle et est couronné par la main de Dieu sortant du ciel ; entre les deux, une crois.

John I succeeded Nicephorus II Phocas who had been assassinated at the instigation of John and Theophano, the second wife of Nicephorus. John, a great general, triumphed over the Bulgarians in 971. He began a brilliant campaign in Palestine, but died of typhoid.
