Historical background

JULIA

(103 BC)

Lucius Appuleius Saturninus, tribune of the plebs, with the support of Marius, had the "lex frumentaria" voted, favorable to veterans who had served during the war against Jugurtha (112-106 BC), giving them land in Africa. The "lex Appuleia de maiestate" establishes a new "quæstio perpetua". Marius prepares to face the barbarian hordes that have invaded Cisalpine Gaul. That year, Marius was consul for the third time, associated with Lucius Aurelius Orestes.
