Historical background

LIEGE - BISHOPRIC OF LIEGE - LOUIS OF BOURBON

(1456-1482)

Louis de Bourbon is the son of Charles de Bourbon, Dauphin of Auvergne, and Agnès, daughter of Jean sans Peur, he is therefore a nephew of Philippe le Bon. The inhabitants of Liège, under the leadership of Raes de Heers rose up against Louis de Bourbon and allied themselves with the King of France Louis XI who abandoned them. In 1465, the people of Liège had to sign the Peace of Saint-Trond which marked the reinstatement of Louis de Bourbon as prince-bishop of Liège and who named Philippe le Bon as "Mambour" (governor of Liège). New uprisings led by Raes de Heers quickly caused trouble, but the inhabitants of Liège were defeated by Charles the Bold on October 28, 1467 at Brusthem. After a new revolt of the people of Liège, the city was completely razed in October 1468 by Charles the Bold and Louis XI.
