Historical background

LOTHAIR I

(840-855)

Lothaire is the eldest son of Louis the Pious and Ermengarde, who died in 818. After revolting against his father, he became emperor on his death. His son, Lothair II (855-869), was king of Lotharingia and not emperor, because he left this title to his brother Louis II (855-875).
