Historical background

LOTHAIR II

(855-869)

After 843, Verdun became part of Lotharingia. In 842, Charles II the Bald and Louis the German had signed the Oath of Strasbourg against Lothaire IeLOTHAIRr, (first document in French). The Treaty of Verdun, August 8, divided the Carolingian empire between the sons of Louis the Pious. Lothair recovered the imperial title. He died in 855 and his second son, Lothair II (835-869) became king of Lotharingia, Louis II becoming emperor (855-875) and his second brother, Charles, king of Provence (855-863).
