Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle pour ce type de monnayage sur un petit flan bombé, parfaitement centré des deux côtés. Très beau portrait de la Vierge Marie. Joli revers de style fin, mais les inscriptions ne sont pas lisibles. Belle patine avec des reflets dorés

Obverse description : La Vierge nimbé assise de face sur un siège, vêtue du pallium et du maphorium, tenant des deux mains un nimbe orné de la tête de l’enfant Jésus.

Reverse legend : INSCRIPTION NON VISIBLE.
Reverse description : Manuel Ier et saint Théodore debout de face, tenant le labarum bouleté ; Manuel Ier est couronné, vêtu du divitision et du loros, tenant un l’akakia de la main droite ; saint Théodore est nimbé, vêtu militairement, tenant un globe.
Reverse translation : (Manuel desposte, saint Théodore).

Commentary


Flan scyphate. Électrum de couleur jaunâtre (or). Très belle représentation de la Vierge avec l’enfant Jésus. Au revers, le vêtement de Manuel est richement décoré. Six globules sur la pan du divitision de Manuel. Labarum pointé en cœur.

MANUEL I KOMNENOS

(8/04/1143-24/09/1180)

The very long reign of Manuel I marks the last Byzantine burst before the fall of 1204. Impregnated with Latin culture, he had to face the second crusade (1147-1149), led by Louis VII of France who, with the help of the Normans of Roger II, attacked Byzantium. The Normans seized part of Greece (Corinth and Thebes). Louis VII had to return to France just before divorcing Eleanor of Aquitaine. Manuel was the son-in-law of Conrad III and Frederic Barbarossa was his sworn enemy. The Emperor of Germany urged the Sultan of Iconium to revolt against the Byzantines who were crushed at the battle of Myrioscephalon in 1176. After a reign of 37 years, Manuel died out in 1180, leaving Byzantium weakened, easy prey for Christians and Muslims.
