Historical background

MARIE-ANTOINETTE, QUEEN OF FRANCE

(1774-1793)

Marie-Antoinette was born in Vienna on December 2, 1755. She is the fourth daughter of Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresa of Austria. Choiseul negotiated his marriage with the Dauphin Louis. The marriage was celebrated in Versailles on May 16, 1770. After the death of Louis XV, the Dauphin Louis ascended the throne of France under the name of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette became Queen of France. She led a luxurious court life which earned her the nickname "Madame Deficit"; she was also called "the Austrian" because she largely favored her compatriots. After the start of the French Revolution, she pushed the King of France to seek help from European powers. She was imprisoned in the Temple after the flight from Varennes (June 1791). After being transferred to the Conciergerie, she was tried before the Revolutionary Court and guillotined on October 16, 1793..
