Historical background

MOROCCO - HASSAN I

(1873-1894)

Mohammed IV sultan of Morocco of the Alaouite dynasty died on September 16, 1873. His son Moulay Hassan succeeded him under the name of Hassan I. The latter already managed current affairs under the reign of his father. Hassan I initiates reforms and against internal rebellions. He strives to contain the ambitions of the European powers (France, Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany) in particular the so-called protected system which grants significant powers to foreign consuls and their staff. The Madrid Conference of 1880 provides a legal framework for this influence. Thus Hassan I manages to preserve the territorial integrity of Morocco.
