MYSIA – PARION / PARIUM

(5th century BC)

Parion or Parium was founded in 710 BC It was located between Lampsaque and Cyzicus at the mouth of the Hellespont on the Propontis. Its coinage at the head of the Gorgon began at the beginning of the 5th century BC. In the following century, the gorgoneion passed from the obverse to the reverse. It normally adorned Athena's aegis and was believed to petrify any enemy who dared look it in the face..
