Historical background

OCTAVIAN

(63 BC - 27 BC)

Octavian, born September 23, 63 BC in Thurium, was adopted by his great-uncle, Julius Caesar, in 45 BC. After Caesar's death, he formed the second triumvirate with Marc Antony and Lepidus and was one of the architects of the proscriptions which cost Cicero his life in 43 BC. In 42 BC, Brutus and Cassius were defeated at Philippi, where they committed suicide. After the naval battle of Actium (31 BC) and the conquest of Egypt the following year, Octavian celebrated a triple triumph in Rome (August 13-15, 29 BC). That year the temple of Julius Caesar was dedicated..
