Historical background

PAPAL STATES - INNOCENT IV (Sinibaldo de Fieschi)

(25/06/1243-07/12/1254)

Sinibaldo de Fieschi, bishop of Albenga, was elected page in Anagni on June 25, 1243. He took the name of Innocent IV. His pontificate was marked in particular by the conflicts with Emperor Frederick II Hohenstaufen, which led him to leave Rome in the summer of 1244 for his city of Genoa, then Lyon. In 1245 he assembled a council which deposed the emperor. Frederick II died in 1250, and the pope was able to return to Rome from 1253. He died in Naples on December 7, 1254.
