Historical background

PARTHIA - PARTHIAN KINGDOM - VOLOGASES I

(51-78)

After the short reign of Vonones II (51), his son Vologases I showed up on the throne. The search for the solution of the Armenian problem constituted the primordial axis of his policy. He initially temporized with the demands of Rome because he had to face two rebellions (that of his son, the future Vardanes II, and that of the usurper Sanabares). Vologesis I, having restored the situation on both fronts, concentrated on Armenia, destined for his younger brother, Tiridates. Corbulon, general of Nero, chased the young Arsacid and placed on the throne of Armenia a creature of Rome, Tigranes V. The Parthians regained the advantage, defeated the Romans and drove out their protege. After a long war and interminable negotiations, peace was signed and Tiridates came to Rome in 66 to receive the crown of Armenia from the hands of Nero. On this occasion, the Temple of Janus was closed, marking the end of hostilities. Vologèse I is considered one of the greatest Arsacid monarchs.
