Historical background

PHOENICIA - BYBLOS

(4th century BC)

Adramelek - king

Byblos, also known as "Gebal", was located 20 km north of Beirut. For the 4th century BC, we know the names of the following kings: Elpaal, Azbaal, Adramelek and Ainel. They all present the same monetary typology. One notices on the coins the murex, shell very widespread in the region, which had made the wealth of Tire and was used to dye the precious fabrics to give them the color purple.
