Commentary

Historical background

RAURACI - RAURAQUES

1st century BC

The Rauraques are a people originally established in the Ruhr to which they gave their name. Confronted with the migration of the Suevi at the beginning of the 1st century BC. J. -VS. , the Rauraques emigrate to the extreme north of the territory of the Séquanes (current Sundgau) as well as to the current cantons of Basel-city and Basel-countryside. Established on the borders of the territories occupied by the Triboques, Latobices and Tulinges, they are again confronted with the Suevi during the colonization of the Sequan territory by the latter from -60 and take refuge in Rhaetia. With the Tulinges, Latobices and Boïens, the Rauraques join the Helvetians during their attempt to migrate to the west of Gaul in -58. Defeated with the latter by Julius Caesar, the surviving Rauraques are pushed back with their companions in misfortune beyond the Jura massif. Except for the Boii settled in Aedui territory, these peoples will form Helvetia. Their main towns were Augusta Raurica (Augst) the capital city, Basilia (Basel), Argenluaria (Artzenheim) and Argentovaria (Horbourg - Haut-Rhin or Biesheim - Alsace). In 1792, part of the former bishopric of Basel declared itself independent under the name of Rauracian Republic. Source www. wikipedia. org.
