Historical background

ROMAN REPUBLIC - ANONYMOUS

(241-235 BC)

The first Punic war which had started in 264 before J. - C. ends in 241 before J. - C. to the advantage of Rome. After the occupation of Sardinia and Corsica in 238 BC by the Romans, the Carthaginians seized Spain. For the first time, the Temple of Janus is closed, marking the fact that Rome knows peace. In 233 BC, we know that the Urbs (Rome) had 270,713 citizens. The following year C. Flaminius proceeds to the distribution of land lots of "ager Gallicus". A Roman embassy is sent to Hamilcar, Hannibal's father in Spain. In 230 or 229 BC, Hamilcar died and was succeeded by his son-in-law Hadrusbal. A treaty signed in 228 BC between the Romans and the Carthaginians makes the Ebro the border of the Carthaginian possessions and guarantees the neutrality of Saguntum, an ally of Rome.
