Historical background

SPAIN - CELTIBERIAN - BILBILIS (Valle de Jalon - Zaragoza province)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The Celtiberian city of Bilbilis is located at the confluence of the Jiloca and Jalòn rivers on Valdeherrera. It is mentioned by Strabo (III, 4.13) who reports that the troops of Metellus and Sertorius clashed there. It seems to have been an important production center thanks to the iron mines of Mancayo. The city became a municipality under Augustus (Municipium Augusta Bilbilis) between 13 and 2 BC and the new city was refounded seven and a half kilometers from the Celtiberian city in the Cerro de Bàmbola (Catalayud).
