Historical background

SWITZERLAND - CONFEDERATION OF HELVETIA - CANTON OF APPENZELL

This canton of Switzerland is an enclave in the canton of St. Gallen. The name Appenzell comes from the Latin "Abbatis cella", the cell of the abbot, and is mentioned for the first time in 1071. The introduction of the Reformation caused a religious division of the country with the creation of two half-cantons : Inner-Rhodes (Catholics) and Outer-Rhodes (Protestants).
