Historical background

SYRIA - SELEUKID KINGDOM - ACHAEUS

(220-214 BC)

Achaios was the cousin of Seleucus III (226-223 BC) and Antiochus III (223-187 BC). He took part in the expedition of Seleucus III and punished his assassins, refused the throne and rallied to Antiochus III. He reclaimed all the territories lost by Antiochus Hierax and was sensitive to ugly arguments. However, after the usurpation of Molon (222-220 BC) and his ousting, he had himself proclaimed king in Seleucia of Lycos in 220 BC. After the death of Molon, Antiochus III turned against him. After trying to take Antioch, Achaios finally took refuge in Sardis where he was captured in 214 BC and savagely executed (flayed alive, impaled and beheaded!).
