Exemplaire frappé sur un flan large, bien centré des deux côtés. Beau portrait complet entouré de la stemma. Joli revers de style fin. Frappe un peu brouillée. Patine avec des reflets dorés

Obverse description : Tête diadémée d'Antiochus VII à droite, entouré de la stemma.

Reverse description : Athéna nicéphore debout à gauche, casquée et drapée, tenant une Niké de la main droite, une javeline et un bouclier de la main gauche ; dans le champ à gauche, un monogramme ; le tout dans une couronne de laurier.

Commentary
Mêmes coins que l’exemplaire de la collection Spaer (SNG Spaer, n° 1871, pl. 122). Trace de cassure de coin caractéristique visible au niveau du cou. Trace de double frappe sur la stemma.

SYRIA - SELEUKID KINGDOM - ANTIOCHUS VII SIDETES
(138-129 BC)
Antiochus VII was the second son of Demetrius I and the brother of Demetrius II Nicator. His nickname Sidetes comes from the city of Side, where he was raised. He married his sister-in-law Cleopatra, the daughter of Ptolemy VI, after eliminating Tryphon who had had Antiochus VI Dionysus assassinated. During his reign, he had to fight against the Jews who had emancipated themselves and refused to pay tribute, and against his powerful Parthian neighbors who had captured his brother, Demetrius II Nicator. Defeated by the Parthians of Phraates II (138-127 AC.), he died during a brawl and left a son, the future Antiochus IX Cyzicene.
