Historical background

THRACE - KINGDOM OF TYLIS - KAVAROS

(c. 225-/220-218 BC)

The first mentions of the Kingdom of Tylis date back to the early years of the 3rd century BC. The last king was Cavarus (230-218 BC). Cavaros was a Celtic king and is cited by Polybius in his History, IV, 46. Byzantium paid tribute to the Kingdom of Tylis between 3,000 and 24,000 gold staters (80 talents). Cavarus settled a dispute between Byzantium and the king of Bithynia, Prusias. The Kingdom of Tylis finally fell to the Thracians and was annihilated.
